George Bernard Ferguson 1887 - 1954(?) Marguerette June Machesney 1895 - 1950? married Oct. 4, 1905.
I hardly knew them but what memories I have are of she stern, not cuddly, he rough, stern, patriarchal.
He'd pick me up and rub his 2-3 day growth on my cheeks and laugh. I don't remember any interaction
with her other than maybe impatience... mostly busy, indifferent. Who knows what was going on with
them really, but my Father did tell me that George (his father) had criticised lumberjacks for getting
"uppidity" when they requested that their food be served on trays that didn't turn everything black. Their
marriage certificate, October 4, 1905, has their residence as Munising, Michigan but they lived in
Chatham later, were neighbors with Kallios and Tormas.  They're 28 and 20 here.

The Fergusons came to Michigan from Canada (from Scotland or Ireland previous to that)
and owned a logging company, which when it went bust (the banks wouldn't, I'm told,
extend the loan due date when early snows prevented moving the logs to market). The family
went back to Canada but George, who they had sent to veterinarian school so he could
caretake the horses, had a trade so stayed. I'm primed to believe this was rather self-serving,
disloyal, but, again, who knows? They are phantoms, here once but now gone. On their
marriage license their "father" is listed as Anthony Ferguson, Fire Department driver, and June
Machesney, with their Mother's maiden names, Ann O'Donnell and June Wedlock. So that's where
Papa's middle name came from, Floyd Wedlock Ferguson. If it is true that George worked for the
fire department (see photo further below) and that is not actually his Father Anthony... well he
went on later to work for the prison as a veterinarian, possibly in the camps rather than the
prison itself, given that they lived in Munising or Chatham... later in Marquette. Thelma, Papa's
sister, called to tell us that he had died, must have been in the early 50s. I answered the phone
and Thelma said, "Tell them Grampa died." and rang off. I tried to announce it in the crowded
kitchen and Nanny impatiently asked what I'd said. I burst out crying and said "Grampa died."

Not sure what the occasion was for the photo below. Maybe folks just got periodic formal portraits done, those
with the means. I've seen her name spelled Margaret McChesney on the backs of photos.

George is the second from the left, bottom row in this photo of "fire laddies", as they're described on the back.
Taken in Munising, Michigan, 1903. The names are all listed on the back of the photo. Can't tell if the
moustache is on its way in or out of style.

George with a huge line of fish, caught maybe in Lake Superior?  Thelma with him, 1915, the year Papa was born
so she's definitely older, probably the elder child.

Below, George and a very youthful Everette Snyder, who married Marilyn Ferguson, my Father's sister, so was my uncle. They're
joking around apparently but still, ol' George doesn't look like a lot of laughs. The youngster who appears in the second shot is
Everett's son Boyd... don't know the the names of the deceased fishes. But where is it? Whose home is that? Probably mid to late 40s.

"Mrs. Snyder and Grandma Ferguson", written on the back. I suppose Mrs. Snyder must be related to Everett,... can't be Marilyn.
Probably his Mom. Looks like it's in Florida or maybe California.

I repeat these shots (below) uncropped to show more of the context. The bottom shot has "Grandpa Ferguson" written on the back
but with a question mark. He was a large animal veterinarian.

Floyd's sister Eleanor with George. His legs were amputated in successive surgery due, I think, to diabetes. Not sure
where this photo was taken... looks western? Second time a bottle appears with him. Was he adrinker?
Dunno but Floyd seemed to be cautious around alcohol and his brother Harold definitely had a problem.

below - back of the photo: "George & Ada Norton, Herman McChesney(spelled this way), Mr. & Mrs. Morrow, second couple?"
Floyd's Mother Marguerette was a Machesney. Don't know how Norton fits in?
Not clear who is who, which is which. Or where this is, Chatham? Marquette, Munising?
